In some European folklore, the white droplets from the plant were believed to represent the milk of the Virgin Mary
In many traditional folk medicine practices is was believed that the liver was the seat of emotions. A spring tonic made of milk thistle would be used to release pent up emotions stored in the liver as a treatment for seasonal depression.
Harvesting
Leaves can be plucked and eaten, seeds are harvested in the fall. Spines of the plant need to be removed. All parts of the plant can be used medicinally.
