History and Fun Facts
It has relatives from 400 million years ago, making it a “living fossil”
It has the ability to absorb heavy metals, arsenic, and gold into its tissue
Because of it’s ability to absorb gold, during the gold rush people used it as an indicator for possible gold in the streams it surrounded. This wasn’t always accurate.
It is a colony plant, it grows in clusters
Harvesting
It is best harvested after the fertile stalk has died back, the vegetative stock grown afterwards is what contains the medicinal properties. After the leaves start to droop, it is no longer potent.
