LONG TERM USE NOT RECOMMENDED. High levels of selenium and silica can cause kidney, urinary tract, and heart issues, too much of a good thing can be very bad!

WHO SHOULD NOT USE: Children, those who are pregnant (high selenium can cause birth defects, check with doctor), those already low in B1 and thiamine, those on blood pressure medication that flushes out potassium, those already low on potassium, those who are still struggling with alcohol addiction as it also reduces thiamine, anyone already on “water pills”

ALLERGENS: carrots and nicotine (horsetail contains trace amounts of nicotine)

Drug Interactions

  • Lithium (causes a build up of lithium in system, talk to doctor about dosage)

It has relatives from 400 million years ago, making it a “living fossil”

It has the ability to absorb heavy metals, arsenic, and gold into its tissue

Because of it’s ability to absorb gold, during the gold rush people used it as an indicator for possible gold in the streams it surrounded. This wasn’t always accurate.

It is a colony plant, it grows in clusters

It is best harvested after the fertile stalk has died back, the vegetative stock grown afterwards is what contains the medicinal properties. After the leaves start to droop, it is no longer potent.

6 grams a day for adults using it regularly (temporarily) for a condition
Children and 65+ should use a lower dose (discuss with doctor)
