The herb does contain several active compounds, however, including a number of antioxidant polyphenols. The root also contains a compound called syringin that stimulates the production of acetylcholine, which triggers increased insulin release from the pancreas.

The root is often harvested when the plant is dormant. The root is typically the only part of the plant that is used medicinally.

There is no standard dose, although most studies tend to stick within 1-4g per day.
As with any adaptogen, it is recommended to cycle your use. A long-term cycle would be 8 weeks on with 4 weeks off of the herb, while a short-term cycle is using for a few days in a row and then taking a few days off.
